Obituary of Jessie Alex OLDHAM, Hardin County, Illinois Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives Copyright 1999 Wanda Reed Name of Deceased: Jessie Alex OLDHAM Name of Newspaper: Hardin County Independent Date of Newspaper: 29 December 1927 Whether we are asleep or awake, death's impending doom is over us all, no time from the time of existence we are subject to his call. Noiseless and ceaseless is his advance. Infancy in its purity, manhood in his strength, and age in its honor cannot escape. His path leads to the door of all, knocks at the door and we answer his call. In the Adams Cemetery stands a beautiful mound in the memory of Jessie Alex Oldham who died December 10, 1927, after an illness of three weeks of stomach, bowel and liver trouble, being forty-four years and twenty seven days old. The last week of his illness he was transferred by Dr. B. C. Rembe to the Creal Springs Hospital, accompanied by his brother, Charley, who stayed with him until the end came, who bears witness to his last words which were full of love for all, and faith in God whose call he was ready and willing to answer. Alex, as he was commonly called, was a son of Jessie and Delaney Oldham, the youngest of a family of seven children: Martha, Elisha, Joseph, Charles, Sarah, Marsh and Alex. On September 5, 1907 he was married to Lucy Hindall, to this union was born one child, May. When the child was only 5 years old, the mother died, after which time Alex and his baby daughter made their home with his mother until his death. He became a member of the IOOF at Rock Creek # 821 at the age of twenty one and was thereafter an active loyal member. His funeral was conducted by Rev. J.M. Lowry who preached very touchingly to a host of grief stricken relatives and friends, at the home of the deceased, after which the remains of the deceased brother was conveyed to it's last resting place by the members of his lodge, and there officially but tenderly was placed beneath the tomb to await the final call. He leaves an aged mother, three brothers, a daughter and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his departure. The mother loses an affectionate son, the daughter a loving, devoted father, the IOOF a loyal member and brother, the community a good neighbor and the country a deserving citizen.
