Obituary of Louis Allen Vinyard, Hardin County, IL Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives Copyright 1999 Wanda Reed Name of Deceased: Louis Allen Vinyard Name of Newspaper: Hardin County Independent Date of Newspaper: 4 March 1926 Louis Allen Vinyard, the son of George and Mary Vinyard, born August 4, 1844 died at his home near Karbers Ricge, February 18th, 1926 of senile disabilities. When the dark days of the Rebellion was hovering over the United States, a call was made for volunteers. Uncle Louis, as he was commonly called to the younger men, heard the call and enlisted in Co. C 48th Reg. of the Illinois Vol. Inf. in September 1861. He was in the battles of Ft. Henry, Donelson and Shiloh Hill, afterwards receiving a sun stroke which weakened his mind and injured his health for life and was given an honorable discharge in 1863 or 4, the exact date not known. He was united in marriage Feb. 27, 1870 to Mrs. Lucretia Gullett, mother of J.G. Gullett by a former marriage. To this union was born three children, namely Rachel, died in infancy, Elmer E. and Lora Hughes of Carmi and on account of sickness was unable to attend her father's funeral. Uncle Louis had three brothers and one sister namely: T. J. Vinyard, Goerge Vinyard, Joseph Vinyard and Elizabeth A. Morrow, who are left to mourn for their departed brother. He was a man of industrious habits, a kind husband, a loving father and an ideal friend to those in need. The writer speaks from experience having lived on his farm two years, can truthfully say a better man and woman never lived in a community in those in need of help than Uncle Louis and Aunt Lucretia. I always called them the good samaritans. On February 29th. 1926 his remains were conveyed to the M.E. Church at Karbers Ridge and by his request the writer preached a funeral to the living. After taking the last look at him, his body was taken to the Pyle Cemetery and there interred by the side of his wife to await the resurrection of the just for he told the children he was ready to go. We extend sympathy to the bereaved. Rev.
