Obituary for William R. Ledbetter William R. Ledbetter, 3rd son and 7th child of the late John T. Ledbetter, by his first wife, died at Marion, IL. Nov. 16, 1909, after a brief illness of maleria hemituria. He was born in this county Feb. 15, 1880 and lived here until about grown. Went to Halcomb, MO. some 10-12 years ago. Taught school a while, was cashier in a bank there and later engaged in the insurance business. Two of his brothers, James and Herbert, live in Marion and for that reason, perhaps, he was induced to locate there a year or so ago, where he has since worked very successdfully in the insurance business, having laid the foundation for a substantial fortune. He owned a farm in Missouri and had a policy on his life for $5,000 which added to the notes and money he had, leaves his family in comparatively easy circumstances. He belonged to a family of 9 children. All of whom survive him, and all attended his funeral but his oldest sister, Mrs. Kate White, who lives in Arkansas. He was large and portly, possessed a rare business trait and had an exceedingly bright future. Standing thus at the zenith of his work and in the prime of life, the fell destroyer came. When the sun of his life shone brightest it paled suddenly and disappeared forever. When death comes to the old and decrepit it seems natural, and we can easily reconcile ourselves to such a loss, but when it comes to those who are in the meridian of life and in the very acme of their usefulness, it is hard for frail humanity to exclaim "The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord." Deceased was a nephew of Rev. D.A. Ledbetter and wife, Rev. John Thornton and wife, J.L. Lowry and wife and the writer, of this county, besides these and many other relatives here and elsewhere. He leaves a wife and three children, four brothers and four sisters to mourn his untimely death. Peace to his ashes.
