Funeral services for Miss Elizabeth Brownlee were held Monday afternoon [December 22] from the Morgan home north of College park, where she had resided for the past few months. Rev. J. C. Townsend, pastor of the Congregational church, had charge of the services and the service of song was by Mrs. Hugh Baird. Six nephews of the deceased acted as body bearers and interment was in the Brownlee family lot in Galva cemetery. Kenneth Brownlee, Roland Brownlee, Ned Brownlee, and David Welsh, all of Chicago, Wilbur Maddox, Duluth, and Raymond Maddox, Galva, were the bearers. The Brownlee family were pioneer residents of the village of Galva and played a prominent part in its early development. Thomas and Elizabeth Brownlee arrived here when the town was yet in its infancy. They raised their family here, and while Miss Brownlee was not born here she had spent her entire life in Galva. The Brownlee Lumber company was one of Galva’s most important businesses. As the years passed and some of the the [sic] family were removed by death, the other brothers and sisters moved to other cities, Miss Elizabeth Brownlee alone remaining in Galva. She occupied the family home west of College park. Teacher of Art. In early life she began the study of art. She taught in the Princeton schools and for many years taught privately in Galva. Her paintings in oil, water color or pastel, are to be found in the homes of many Galva families. A few years ago she divided her home into two apartments and occupied the second floor, Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Adams having the remainder of the house. Later she moved to Kewanee, but her fondness for Galva and Galva friends brought her back a few months ago. Miss Blanche Morgan, former librarian and a lifelong friend of Miss Brownlee, arranged an apartment for her on the second floor of the Morgan home at the northwest corner of College park. Failing health prevented her undergoing exertion of any kind during the last six months of her life, but she retained her interests to the last and a few weeks ago served as a member of the committee judging the posters made by Galva school children at the public library exhibition during Children’s Book Week. Passes In Hospital. She was taken to a Chicago hospital December 4, where her death took place, and Chicago relatives brought her body to Galva for burial. Immediate relatives who survive are two brothers and one sister; William Brownlee, of Iowa City; Joseph Brownlee, of Florida; and Mrs. Alice M. Welch, Cedar Rapids. Other brothers and sisters preceded her in death. There are a number of nephews and other relatives. Most of the out-of-town relatives who attended the funeral srevices [sic] returned to their homes Monday and Tuesday. Wilbur Maddox, of Duluth, remained for a visit with his father, C. C. Maddox and brother Raymond and family.” END Additional Comments: “The Galva News” (Galva, Henry County, Illinois). December 25, 1930 (Thursday). Elizabeth B. Brownlee never married.
