DeKezel, 94, of Colona passed away on Friday, June 27, 2008, at the Hammond-Henry Hospital, Skilled Care Unit, Geneseo. A funeral Mass celebrating his life will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Colona. The Rev. Duane Jack will celebrate. Burial will be at North Cemetery, Geneseo. Family and friends of Phil may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday at Vandemore Funeral Home, Geneseo, where a scripture service will be held at 7:45 p.m. Friends also may call one hour prior to Mass at the church. Memorials may be directed to the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Alzheimer’s research, or the American Red Cross. Phil was born on Aug. 24, 1913, in Neponset, Ill., the son of Ben and Emma Boeji DeKezel. He attended rural Geneseo schools, and was united in marriage to Margaret Lyphout on Oct. 5, 1940, in Sacred Heart Church, Moline. Phil farmed in the Geneseo and Colona areas for many years. Prior to farming he worked at the Moline Iron Works, and after retiring from farming he worked at Ametek in East Moline. He was a member of the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Colona, and the Holy Name Society of the church. He enjoyed playing his harmonica and guitar, gardening and fishing. Survivors include his wife, Margaret; sons (and spouses), Robert (Elaine) DeKezel, Holland, Pa., Michael (Brenda) DeKezel, Colona; daughters (and spouse), Kathy Cotty, Doyline, La., Ruth DeKezel, Colona, Susan (Mark) Stone, Colona; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, with one expected soon; and a sister, Helen Carrico, Geneseo. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Elizabeth; brothers, Edward, Charles and Ben; and a son-in-law, Claude Cotty.
