"WORKER KILLED AT MALLEABLE PLANT; HEAD CRUSHED BY HUGE DROP HAMMER Emil DeKezel, Geneseo, Dies Instantly When Caught In Die Machine East Moline -- Emil DeKezel, 28, of Geneseo, machine operator at the Union Malleable Iron company factory here, was killed instantly at the plant about 3 yesterday afternoon when he was crushed by a heavy drop hammer on a die machine. DeKezel was adjusting the machine when the hammer was released accidentally, crushing his skull between the two dies. The heavy hammer, used for stamping out cutter bars for mowing machines, was up as the workman started to adjust the lower die. In an undetermined manner the trip mechanism which held it was released and the huge instrument fell on his head and face with such force that death was instantaneous. Fellow workmen immediately released the hammer. Work was suspended for the rest of the afternoon. A verdict of accidental death was returned at an inquest conducted at the factory by Dr. J.W. Seids, coroner. Mr. DeKezel was a life-time resident of the Geneseo vicinity, having moved from Geneseo to the Shadinger farm north of Osco last Saturday. He was born Jan. 25, 1914, in Geneseo, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles DeKezel. He attended Hanna Center and White schools, and had worked as a farm hand, mechanic and shop worker. He married Verda Betcher in Geneseo St. Malachy's Catholic church Nov. 28, 1940. Surviving are the widow and a daughter, Joyce Ann; his parents, three sisters, Mrs. Wilbert VandeWoestyne of Geneseo, and Dorothy and Loretta at home, and one brother, Edward of Osco. The body was taken to Myers funeral home in Geneseo."
