FIRE BREAKS OUT AGAIN AT FARM IN FAMILY ABSENCE
Again while members of the Ernest Salmon family were absent,
fire broke out a third time within the last four years in the
buildings on their farm, seven miles west and three-quarters of
a mile north of Milford. The latest was about 3 PM Saturday when
flames broke out in a barn and burned the roof off the 48
by 48 foot cement block and frame constructed building. The
fire was quenched by members of the Milford, Cissna Park and
Woodland fire departments. Just seven months ago-on December
15, 1952-fire of undetermined origin broke out and destroyed
the former residence while members of the family were away.
Only a desk containing personal papers was saved in that fire.
The barn in which Saturday's blaze occurred was built in 1950
to replace one destroyed by fire in 1949. Twenty-eight tons of
stock hay and several tons of straw were destroyed in Saturday's
blaze. Jerry Crist, a member of the Milford Fire Department,
was overcome by smoke while fighting the blaze, but responded
to treatment and was said to have recovered from effects.
Salmon estimated the loss of the hay and straw and damage to
the barn at approximately $2,000. He said the loss was covered
by insurance.
Salmon was working with his brother, John, in making hay at
the latter's farm about a mile south when he noticed smoke
issuing from his barn. A neighbor also noticed the smoke at
about the same time. An alarm spread to the fire departments
in the Milford, Woodland and Cissna Park communities. Meanwhile,
Salmon liberated a calf which was in the barn. Firemen
succeeded in confining the blaze to the roof of the barn and
then quenched the fire.
Mrs. Salmon and son, Gene, age eight, had left last Tuesday
with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Carter,
and son of southeast Milford, to visit relatives in St. James,
Minnesota. They returned home Sunday evening.
The Salmon family is residing in their new home, constructed
since the December 15 fire which destroyed their former
residence.
