HIGHWAY CRASH FATAL TO TWO BUCKLEY WOMEN
The Iroquois County traffic death toll stands at 13 with the
death of Miss Lydia Salmon, 74, Buckley at 7:35 PM Thursday
the second victim of a two car crash.
Miss Salmon's cousin, Mrs. Carl Schuldt, 69, also of Buckley
was killed instantly in the crash which occurred Thursday
morning on Route 49, 5 miles north of Cissna Park. Miss
Salmon was taken to Iroquois Hospital in Watseka for
emergency treatment and later transferred to Carle Hospital,
Urbana, where she died.
Joint funeral services were held at 1 PM Sunday at the St.
John's Lutheran Church with burial in the St. John's Cemetery.
Also injured in the crash was Melvin Calhoun, Chicago, driver
of the second auto involved.
The mishap occurred at 9:45 AM Thursday at Route 49 and
Idaville Road. According to State Trooper Roscoe Mason the
Calhoun car was northbound on Route 49 when it collided
with the other machine eastbound on the Idaville Road. It
has now been established that Miss Salmon was driving the
car which she and her cousin were killed. The car driven by
Miss Salmon, according to Mason, apparently stopped at the
highway, but with her view obstructed by a semitrailer truck
and dust, she pulled onto the highway where her car was
struck broadside by Calhoun's oncoming auto.
Both victims are members of St. John's Lutheran Church of
Buckley and also the Ladies Aid Society.
Miss Salmon, a retired telephone operator, had lived in the
area her entire life. She was born in Ash Grove Township
near Woodworth. Survivors include two sister-in-laws, Mrs.
Arthur Salmon and Mrs. Herman Salmon of Peoria.
Mrs. Schuldt was born February 2, 1895, near Woodworth and
resided in the community her entire life. She married Carl
Schuldt in 1920 in Buckley.
Besides her husband, survivors include sons, Elmer, Arnold
and William all of Buckley, Raymond of Detroit, Michigan
and Gilbert of Kankakee; daughter, Mrs. Leo Kanosky of
Kankakee; a sister, Miss Tillie Salmon of Woodworth;
brothers, John Salmon and William Salmon of Woodworth,
Ernest Salmon of Clifton and Martin Salmon of East Lansing,
Michigan and fourteen grandchildren.
