Other circumstances point toward foul play. A few days ago Smith cashed a draft for 200 at the Arthur, Neb. bank. This he had carried away in a money belt with a steel buckle. The belt was gone and no buckle was found in the ashes. Beside the body was an empty gasoline can. This fact together with the fact that the extremeties of the body were completely consumed while the torso was scarcely touched lead the authorities to believe the man was dead before the fire touched him. No ashes were found in the stove. The only wood in the sod house where the body was found was the roof. This was partially burned. The coroner's jury at Arthur brought a verdict that the man came to his death by violence from unknown parties. Smith was a man of fifty-six. He had separated from his second wife whose relatives live near here. Nine children by his first wife survive him. The remains were taken to Anarga, Ill., by relatives today. Further investigation will be carried on by Arthur county authorities.
