Mr. Copas died Saturday, Nov. 5, 2005, at Marian Medical Center in Santa Maria, California, following a lengthy illness. He was born June 4, 1926 in Thompkinsville, Kentucky, to Elva and Van Copas. He married Joyce Handorf in Kankakee on Oct. 10, 1948. She survives. Other survivors include one son, Michael & Mary Copas of Spokane, Washington; one daughter Cindy & Michael Spears of Santa Maria, California; one sister, Lucille and Ray Herscher of Phoenix, Arizona; two brothers, Harold & Peggy Copas of Crescent city, and Karl Copas of Newport Beach, California; three grandchildren; six step-grandchildren’ 12 great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild. Preceding him in death are his parents, an infant son, Richard, and one brother, Eugene Copas. Mr. Copas graduated from Crescent Iroquois High school. He attended Gallagher School of Business in Kankakee. He served in the Army in the Asiatic theater in Hawaii, following the attack of Pearl Harbor. He sold Watkins Products. After coming to California he became a precision tool and die maker. He later returned to sales in life insurance, working for Life and Casualty of Des Moines, Iowa and Prudential Life and casualty, retiring form the Prudential Insurance Company. Mr. Copas enjoyed fishing and traveling in his recreational vehicles. He visited every state. Paul was active in the communities where he lived. He worked in Organization and extension in the Boy Scouts of America in Los Angeles area, later he served as Scout Master in the Lompoc Valley. He was involved in both the Sun Risers Lion Club and the Noontimes Lions Club and the Lions Sight Conservation Association. During his service with the Lions, he was president of Sunrisers and received Lion of the Year. He was an active member of the Elks Lodge #1538 in Santa Maria. He worked with Fish Meals on Wheels Program delivering meals and later became the route coordinator for Route 9 in the Orcutt area. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church, serving on various boards. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 311 S. Broadway, Santa Maria, California.
