Occupying two stories of the building owned and built by John M. HERBERT for the type of business of the AKERS & Co. department store it is ideally constructed with show windows that display to the best advantage the goods within. Hal R. AKERS, the manager of this fine store, came here from Clay Center, Kan., and has demonstrated that the business methods of the "Sunflower" state are in keeping with the best traditions of the east. With an ambition characteristic of the west he has built up a stock that would do credit to a city many times the size of Murphysboro. Mr. Akers is ably assisted by his wife and a corps of efficient clerks who believe in service to the community which they serve. Mrs. Akers, besides being a good accountant, is also a skilled musician and very fine vocal soloist.
