Elza CLIPNER, one of the pioneers of this city, and his son-in-law, Wm. MILLER, next acquired control of the business and they in turn sold it to Louis HOFFMAN, who conducted it until nine years ago. The store for a number of years occupied only on floor of one room of the present location. Nine years ago Chas F. CHAPMAN, at that time cashier of the City National Bank, and a son of F. C. A. CHAPMAN, one of the pioneers of Murphysboro, assumed charge of the business. The business has grown steadily under the present ownership and management until it now occupies both floors of the entire business building located at 903-905-907 Walnut Street and warerooms in the Odd Fellows' and Jackson Club buildings. A force of 10 salespeople and deliverymen are kept busy and the store which supplies much of the furniture and stoves sold within a radius of many miles from Murphysboro. The firm is composed of Chas F. CHAPMAN and Earl E. ROLLO. Additional Comments: Transcribed by Mary Riseling from grandfather C. E. RISELING's collection of old newspapers.
