The first men to take up the work of this order were Henry JACOBS, James ALEXANDER, Francis MAUND, Edmund NESBIT, John PATCHETT, Joseph PARTINGTON, Francis SYMOND, William LIMBERT, Harry BATTY, Andrew LAWSON, George T. JONES, Edward JONES, George PARTINGTON and Andrew KILLIAN, who became members by initiation and John McBRIERTY, William BODEKER and Richard JENKINS, who were admitted by eight during the remainder of the year, making a total membership of 26 on January 1st, 1881. Of this number Harry BATTY is the only member left. John McBRIERTY served as Chancellor Commander for the first term and William LIMBERT served as the first Keeper of Records and Seal. Mr. Limbert continued in this office until Dec. 31, 1882, and was followed by Thomas M. CAMPBELL. A number of these men have served several terms as Chancellor Commander. In its forty years of service in Murphysboro, Leonidas lodge has occupied five locations, including its present quarters in the Andrews' building. Soon after the lodge was instituted, it moved into the Bodeker building, which was completed in 1881. This location was continued until 1891, when the lodge moved to Desberger's hall, where they remained until that building was destroyed by fire in 1901 and then moved to the Apollo hall at 14th and Walnut streets. This location was retained until July 1st, 1923, at which time the lodge moved to its present quarters. The following men have represented the lodge at the Grand Lodge: John McBRIERTY, Wm. BODEKER, Jos. STEVENS, R. J. McELVAIN, Sr., E. A. WELLS, Chas L. RITTER, Ellis H. ROGERS, Jos H. DAVIS, John J. PERKINS, and Wm. T. STEPHENSON.
