The financial depression is weighing heavily on our businessmen even yet. On every corner you can hear the inquiry "when will they pay?" Trade in all its branches is very dull; farmers bring little to town from the fact that there is but little or no demand, there being no money in the town and no regular pay-day by the different companies and the citizens are becoming quite economical. The furnaces that are running are doing good work, the lower furnace turning out 405 tons of good iron per week. Mr. Luke SMITH, the Superintendent and "founder," is a practical man in the right place. There is but one of the upper furnaces running which is turning out a good quality of iron, the exact amount we do not know. Boating in the river is rather dull and not so many boats land as in former days. Mr. H. V. OLIPHANT, the gentlemanly superintendent of the Carbondale Grand Tower R. R. can be seen at his post, with his usual attentive and business like manner. We are expecting a new time-table on this road soon. Men are busy in laying down new rails, and when completed the road will be much improved. Health is very good. Dodger Additional Comments: The October 16, 1923 edition of the paper was a Golden Anniversary edition, which included published articles on the history of Murphysboro as well as articles on current events of the day. Transcribed by Mary Riseling from her grandfather C. E. RISELING's collection of old newspapers.
