Mr. & Mrs. Joe FRANZA of North 16th Street are the proud parents of a 10 pound
baby boy born Monday noon. Mother and babe are doing nicely.

Mr. & Mrs. S. N. FADEM of this city entertained with a 6 o'clock dinner at the
Roberts Hotel in Carbondale Tuesday in honor of Louis FIEN who arrived in this
city Monday night. Mr. Fien returned Tuesday night.

Harry SWINFORD and Lena Mae TAGGERT, both of Chicago, were united in marriage by
William E. ROBERTS, Justice of the Peace, at this office Tuesday, Dec. 30th at 3
p.m. They were unaccompanied.

Mr. & Mrs. Jacob SHY, prominent residents of Jonesboro, Ill., will celebrate
their golden wedding at their home in Jonesboro, Ill., New Year's day. They have
lived in Jonesboro and in the same place for 37 years. They are the parents of
Mrs. Chas. LAWS of Pine Street. Mr. SHY is a veteran of the Civil War and is
well known here by A. H. ROBERTS and several others. He is 82 years old.

Prof. Fred SCHROEDER, principal of high schools in Aurora, Minn., is spending
the holidays here the guest of his parents, Mr. & Mrs. John SCHROEDER of 2024
Spruce Street. Professor Schroeder has an enrollment of 800 students and faculty
of 54 teachers. "Prof." says the mercury has been 40 below up there in the iron
belt. He will remain here until after the first of the year and report for duty
at Aurora Jan. 5.

A surprise party was given in honor of Eugene WAGNER, who is here on a furlough
from Great Lakes. Dancing and games were the main feature an at a late hour
refreshments were served to the following: Earl ROSENBERGER, Ray MELVIN, Nina
Mae LOY, Vertie MELVIN, Violet WILLIAMS, Howard STAPLES, Ora Mae WILLIAMS, Frank
CONGARDIA, Ira COOK, Virgil CRISSLER, Anna Mae WAGNER, Fred HARVEL, Fred
FALASTER, Billy HOFFACHER, Rollie HORN, Leon and Eugene WAGNER. The guests
departed at a late hour wishing him a heartiest farewell as he is leaving
January 1, 1925.

Miss Joe MORRIS is continuing to develop an orchard at he sixty-acre farm a mile
an a half south of Big Muddy River on the Murphysboro hard road. Miss Morris now
has 2,000 fruit trees planted, some of which will bear the first time next year,
and has just completed setting out 1,500 grape vines. Miss Morris teaches school
up state and invest part of her savings in development of the orchard and
vineyard. Some months ago, coal prospectors are said to have found five feet of
coal on the Morris land. Drilling was not completed to determine the extent of
the deposit.

All parties indebted to the late Alex SCHMIDT are requested to make immediate
settlement in order to close the estate. Mrs. Alex SCHMIDT



NEWS FROM EBENEZER RIDGE

Roy MIZER, Herbert LAWDER, Ray TUDOR, Mr. & Mrs. Hobert GIBSON of Chester spent
Christmas with home folks; Harold LAWDER and Lillian MIZER got to stay a few
days during vacation. Homer LAWDER, teaching in Chester, is spending the
holidays at home. Mrs. Emory MALONE of Steelville visited her parents, Mr. &
Mrs. Newman DOBBS.

Mrs. Harold TINDALL of Chester, is visiting her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Sam LAWDER.

Miss Helen GRAH and Patrick URBAN of Chester schools, are home for the holidays.

The Misses Celesta and Wilma McCONKEY of Chester visited relatives here Christmas.

Mr. HARDY and Mrs. CURLISS of Jones Ridge, visited Lacey McCONKEY and family and
attended our Christmas eve entertainment.

Mr. & Mrs. Clifford CAUDLE of Ellis Grove, visited her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Henry
LAWDER Christmas. Mr. Lawder is still taking treatment for the cancer, but at
last account was a little better.

Sidney CLENDINNEN has been visiting home folks for quite a bit.

Sam LAWDER has been somewhat under the weather, but usually manages to be around
and at work.

Mrs. Harry FRAZER is some better but is still sick.

Little Mary WHEATON seems to be holding her own very well, at the last report.
The typhoid had left her, but she is very weak and run down. Her father, Harry
WHEATON, seems to be steadily gaining though slowly.

Miss Ina LAWDER and Lillian MIZER took dinner with Joy and Paul SIMPSON of
Rockwood Friday.



CARBONDALE NEWS BRIEFS

The Illinois Central show employees gave a farewell banquet at the Barnes' Cafe
at 7:00 o'clock Tuesday evening, complimentary to Lloyd P. WALKER, roundhouse
foreman, who has been promoted to general foreman at Kankakee, effective Jan. 1.

Mr. & Mrs. Charles I. HUGHES entertained a company of friends at their home on
Mill Street Tuesday evening complimentary to Mrs. Hughes' sister, Miss Alma
FORBES, of Johnson City, the occasion being Miss Forbes' 18th birthday. There
were about twenty-five present, eighteen of whom were from Johnson City.
Delicious refreshments were served at the close of a very enjoyable evening.

The infant son of Mr. & Mrs. Harry SCHROEDER of Thompson Street, died at the
family home Tuesday morning. The baby was born Friday, Dec. 26. A short funeral
service was held at the home at 11:00 o'clock Wednesday, conducted by Rev. Chas.
J. PARDEE, pastor of the Christian Church. The remains were taken to Tamoroa for
burial Wednesday afternoon.

Ed MINTON was here from Murphysboro Tuesday.

Hiram WILLSON of Murphysboro was a Carbondale visitor Tuesday.

Mrs. Jean DAGLE visited relatives in Murphysboro Tuesday afternoon.

Mrs. P. D. JOHNSON and little son, Billy, visited in Murphysboro Tuesday.

J. T. DANIEL was in St. Louis Tuesday attending a Cadillac dealer's convention.

Russell CLEMENTS of Dixon Springs is spending a few days with friends here.

Miss Margaret FOX has returned from a few days visit at Dixon Springs.

Dr. Laura SWARTZ has returned from Danville, where she spent Christmas with
relatives.

Roscoe BAKER and family have returned from a visit with relatives at Tamaroa.

Mrs. Chas. KRAFT and daughter Barbara of West Frankfort are visiting Carbondale
relatives and friends.

Cyrus and Carl ETHERTON were in St. Louis Tuesday and Wednesday attending a
Chevrolet dealers meeting.

Henry BROHM of the Univeristy of Minnesota at Minneapolis is the guest of his
parents, Mr. & Mrs. Henry BROHM.

Mr. & Mrs. E. B. BIRGE and the latter's mother, Mrs. J. D> MORGAN of Chicago are
the guests of Mrs. Morgan's daughter, Mrs. George ROBINSON Sr., and family.

Mr. & Mrs. J. C. HUNDLEY expect to leave Wednesday night for St. Petersburg,
Florida where they will spend the remainder of winter, at their winter home.

Mr. & Mrs. C. T. HUGHES and children, and Mrs. Angeline HUGHES have returned
from St. Louis where they spent Christmas with Dr. B. Y. ALVIS and family.

Mr. & Mrs. George ANDERSON, newlyweds, have returned from a new days' trip to
St. Louis an are at the home of Mr. Anderson's parents, Mr. & Mrs. C. L.
ANDERSON on North Illinois Avenue.

Joe MONTGOMERY was a business visitor in Cairo Wednesday.

Jimmy BENNETT of Royalton visited Carbondale friends Tuesday evening.

Miss Juanita HATCH of East St. Louis is the guest of friends here.

Chas. BORGER and Harry GOETZ will play for a dance in Shawneetown tonight.

Miss Mae PELTIER of the Herrin Supply Co., is off duty because of illness.

Chas. KING of Decatur was the guest Tuesday night of his daughter, Mrs. Lige
ROBERTSON and family.

Mr. & Mrs. L. W. GOLDMAN and daughter Ruth, went to St. Louis Wednesday to spend
New Year's.

Mr. & Mrs. John POST and Mr. & Mrs. Ray GURLEY attended a party in Cairo Monday
evening.

Mr. & Mrs. A. K. WILSON left today for Indianapolis, Ind., after a visit with
Mrs. Wilson's mother, Mrs. A. J. CAMPBELL and other relatives.

Jack CAMPBELL student at the Southern Illinois Teachers College, has returned
from spending Christmas at his home in Grenada, Miss.

Phillips LEWIS has returned to Chicago where he is attending the University of
Chicago, after a holiday visit with his mother, Mrs. Grace LEWIS.

Misses Helen and Pearl CARTER of Freeburg are the guests of Miss Emelie
KERSTINE. Miss Helen and Miss Kerstine are teachers in the New Athens schools.

Louis PRICE made a business trip to St. Louis Wednesday.

Mr. & Mrs. Theo. SCHNESSLER and son Louis, visited their daughter and sister,
Mrs. W. HOLDER, Christmas.

Ceasa QUALLS, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Harry QUALLS is very ill with typhoid fever.

Mr. & Mrs. Martin MIESNER were business visitors here Monday.

Mrs. Marshall NANCE and daughter Beatrice, spent Saturday with Mr. & Mrs. Qualls.

Mrs. Glen MATTINGLY spent a few hours with her daughter-in-law Mrs. Carmen
MATTINGLY Saturday.

Mrs. Logan OZBURN.

Mr. & Mrs. Howard JACOBS and Mr. & Mrs. Harold JACOBS an daughter Marjie June,
called on C. E. WAYMAN and family Christmas day.

Sam MOORE spent Wednesday in St. Louis.

Mesdames Logan OZBURN, Joe KEMP, and children, called on Grandma Reynolds
Thursday afternoon.

Mr. & Mrs. Roy CRAIN and son Roy Jr. of Carbondale; Mr. & Mrs. Carl TYLER and
children, Robert, Rose, Ruth and Ruby Jewell, of Granite City, spent Christmas
with Mr. & Mrs. James WILD.

Jim CROWELL and sons of Murphysboro called on Mrs. M. G. REYNOLDS and son Fount,
Saturday.

Hazel JACOBS of Murphysboro, is spending the Christmas holidays with he sister,
Mrs. C. E. WAYMAN

Clarence WAYMAN assisted Jim WILDS with his butchering Saturday.
