BUT CHANGES OWNERS 3 TIMES. WILL MANUFACTURE ICE CREAM, CANDY The Murphysboro Bottling Company, one of Murphysboro's oldest established industries first opened its doors for business in 1875 -- just 48 years ago. The business was founded by Ed HAYES and while it has changed ownership three times in its nearly one-half century of existence it has remained in the same block. Under the guiding hand of Mr. HAYES the business grew steadily and new machinery installed from time to time and the capacity of the plant increased. He conducted the business for 17 years when he disposed of it to Joseph STEINLE on February 6th, 1892. Mr. STEINLE added more equipment, sunk a deep well to furnish a plentiful supply of pure water and thoroughly modernized the plant, and increased its daily output to 100 cases of soda water per day. The company now owned by William KULL of Murphysboro and A.J. WILL of Herrin has kept pace with the growth of the city and has one of the best equipped bottling plants to be found anywhere. Three years ago it was moved to the corner of Thirteenth and Hanson streets where a now brick building 36 by 120 feet had been built especially for its use. It is equipped with every labor saving device and has a daily capacity of approximately 600 cases of soda water per day. On August 10th, 1923 the bottling company acquired the Murphysboro Ice Cream and Candy Company, located at Thirteenth and Manning Street. Mr. KULL announced today that he had placed orders for a new outfit of ice cream manufacturing equipment which would be installed at the new building in connection with the bottling plant. The candy factory will remain in its present location, he said. The Murphysboro Bottling Company manfactures a complete line of soft drinks and bottles the genuine Coca Cola. They also carry a stock of soda fountain glassware and supplies.
