All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/il/ilfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Mary Riseling riseling@insightbb.com July 13, 2006, 5:13 pm Murphysboro Daily Independent October 16, 1923 The Fraternal Order of Eagles was on the 10th day of April, 1904, under a special dispensation lawfully issued, instituted and established as a subordinate Aeria of the Order, and granted a charter fully establishing and confirming said Eagles and their successors as Murphysboro Aeria No. 670. This charter was duly executed and the seal of the Grand Aerie affixed thereto the 15th day of July, 1904. There were 155 charter members, a few of which were Congressman Geo W. SMITH, Dominic AIMO, Joe BERRA, John BERGER, Sam CHEATHAM, R. O. DEASON, Ran DECKER, Dr. I. W. ELLIS, Dave FUSTUN, J. J. FREIDMAN, Geo. HORSFIELD, W. M. LEDBETTER, Tom MELVIN, Geo. McCOSKEY, Sam McNEILL, Fred SORRELS, James A. WHITE and Ed TROBAUGH. The first initiation took place in the old Lucier Opera House. The initiatory work was conferred by the Cairo and St. Louis teams, Joe BERRA being the first candidate to receive the work. The first officers of Murphysboro Aerie No. 670 were: Dr. I. W. ELLIS, W. P. Sam McNEILL, W. V. P. Geo McCOSKEY, Chaplain Fred SORRELS, Secy Al WILLIAMS, Treas. Ran DECKER, Inside Guard Dave FUSTUN, Outside Guard J. J. FRIEDMAN, Conductor R. O. DEASON, Trustee Sam CHEATHAM, Trustee Wm. LEDBETTER, Trustee From this handful of 155 men in the beginning our lodge has grown to be a multitude of strength having now enrolled nearly 500 members. This gain in membership is due to the earnest efforts of the following men who guided the flight of our fraternity through the unexplored and unchartered valleys of discontent and brought it safely to rest on the towering peaks of Liberty, Truth, Justice and Equality by having served terms as presiding officer: Dr. I. STEPHENS Leo BUSCH Although like other lodges we have to suffer the loss of those who the Divine Providence sees fit to summons from our subordinate Aeria to the Grand Aerie in Heaven, we have thus far called from us by death 35 members for whom we conduct a memorial service each year to pay tribute.
