The young man was engaged as underground driver at the mines, and while at work the mule attached to the coal cars became frightened, and starting suddenly threw the driver off the front of the loaded cars, the wheels of which passed over his left arm, crushing it in a fearful manner. Dr. John McLEAN was called and used every means in his power from that time until Monday morning to save the arm, but finding the bones and main artery so badly broken and bruised as to prevent the circulation of the blood, it became necessary to amputate it to save his life. Dr. McLean was assisted in the amputation of the arm by Drs. WALL, MAYER, and J. J. JENNELLE, the latter administrating the chloroform. The young man bore the surgical operation with great courage, and seems to be doing as well as could be expected. He is about 14 years of age, and had expected to quit the mines in a few days to attend the winter session of our public school. --DuQuoin Tribune Additional Comments: The October 16, 1923 edition of the paper was a Golden Anniversary edition, which included published articles on the history of Murphysboro as well as articles on current events of the day.
