"The State is not interested," Prosecutor Lewis said. "The Grand Jury considered Mrs. Griffin's relation with all that transpired in the tent the night of the murder and did not indict the woman. "Coroner W. S. FORSHEE later held her as accessory before and after the fact" whatever that means. "Witnesses said Mrs. Griffin tried to fight her husband while Griffin was beating her father." The prosecutor was asked what procedure would be necessary to liberate the woman. He replied that she could be liberated on a Court order. State's Attorney Lewis was asked if it is probable that an attempt will be made to indict her as an accessory. He said the law makes certain exceptions for wives as accessories, and that so far as he knows there is nothing in the murder case that would warrant her indictment. The Court to date has not sentenced Ezra KNUPP, who pleaded guilty to the murder of Hoppe and later on the witness stand for the State said Griffin killed the old man. Meantime Mrs. Griffin remains in jail. Prior to the murder the woman is alleged to have received beatings at her husband's hands when she could not come home empty handed from begging expeditions in the bottoms. Throughout the trial however, the woman proved loyal to her mate. She sat before the Bar with him, fondling his hands at times, and otherwise showing her devotion.
