He was named for Benjamin RUSH, physician and signer of the Declaration of Independence, who was the family doctor at Philadelphia of Mr. NEAL's grandfather. The famous doctor signed the birth certificate of Mr. NEAL's father. During the Civil War Mr. NEAL listened to the distant bombardment of Vicksburg. At the close of the conflict his family moved to Illinois. Within a short time his father died and Mr. NEAL went to work chopping cotton to assist the family, but he soon obtained a job in a mill and learned the trade that was to be the work of his life. Mr. NEAL saved from his earnings and built a mill of his own, but it burned on the second day of its operation and he used the remainder of his money for train fare to Dallas. Here, in 1894, he became connected with the Stanard-Tilton company and twenty years later he built the present plant on South Ervay. Until a few years ago he was active in business of the concern. The veteran Dallasite was for a number of years active in chamber of commerce and charity work. He was honorary vice-president of the United Charities. Mr. NEAL married Miss Lizzie Briscoe LANE in Illinois on June 17, 1874. Surviving are his wife; a son, B. R. NEAL, Jr.; three daughters, Mrs. W. P. BEVANS, Mrs. A. R. THOMPSON, all of Dallas and Mrs. Ray B. WRIGHT, Laredo, and three grandchildren. Additional Comments: This is a follow up to a previous obituary for Benjamin Rush NEAL, which lacked information.
