CLEMENT DODGE HAYDEN 

After an illness with sciatic rheumatism and lagrippe, extending over a period
of five months, United States Deputy Internal Revenue Collector Clement Dodge
Hayden passed away at the family residence, 347 Bluff street, at 12:50 o'clock
Monday morning. Mr. Hayden was the son of the late Capt. and Mrs. Mortimer
Hayden, and was born December 18, 1855, in this city on the present site of the
house in which he passed away. He received his early education at the old First
Ward school and on reaching his majority became one of the most active and
popular young business men in the city. He held positions of trust with the Iowa
Building and Loan Association and at the post office. For the past ten years he
held the position of deputy United States internal revenue collector and was
active in every project for the welfare of the city. November 9, 1887, he was
elected quartermaster of the second brigade of the Iowa National Guard, in which
capacity he served for a number of years and was for several years captain of
the Governor's Greys. 

November 27, 1888, he was united in marriage at Galena, Illinois, to Miss
Florence Mahoney, of that city. He was a prominent member of the Catholic Order
of Foresters and of the Woodmen and was an earnest worker in every project for
the upbuilding of the Catholic church, of which he was a faithful member. His
family consists of his wife and nine children, the eldest of whom is Mortimer,
aged 17, and the youngest an infant of five months. Besides his wife and
children he is survived by one brother, Mortimer, of Nottaway, Va and one
sister, Mrs. A. A. Hyer, of Chicago.
