Former Jo Daviess County Man Dies in Minnesota. James Manion at one time a resident of Jo Daviess county but for the past four years a citizen of St. Cloud, Minnesota, died at his home at that place Wednesday at the advanced age of eighty three years. The deceased was a native of Ireland. Upon coming to the United States, he lived for several years in Hanover township, removing in 1885 to Ramsen, Ia. He made his home at Ramsen for about eight years, when he again moved to Hanover township where he lived up to about four years ago when the family moved to St. Cloud, where he lived up to the time of his death. Mr. Manion is survived by ten children, his wife having died thirty years ago. The children are: Mrs. Daniel McCormick [Mary Manion], of Iona, Minn.; Mrs. David McCormick [Elizabeth Manion], of St. Cloud, Minn.; Mrs. J. F. [John F.] Slayne [Catharin Manion], of Jasper, Minn.; Mrs. Rufus Amos [Metildie/Matilda Manion], of Aylward, Ia.; Mrs. Myron Richie [Helen Agnes Manion], of Napa, Calif.; Miss Bessie [Bridget] Manion, of LaMars, Ia.; John, of Pierre, S.D.; J. Additional Comments: It is most fortunate that this document was obtained by my parents when they visited Galena, Illinois, in January 1996, in search of information about my mother's grandmother, Helen Agnes Manion Richie, and Helen Agnes' parents and siblings. My parents were told that nearly all of the records pertaining to Galena's earlier residents were burned in a fire. However, my father went downtown in Galena to try to find something, anything that might shed some light on Helen Agnes's life before she married Myron Richie in Deadwood, Territory of the Dakotas, and moved to Napa, California, to have their family and live out their days. My father cannot recall where in Galena he found this newspaper clipping, but there were stacks and stacks of newspapers everywhere, and he told the young man who was charged with sorting through them what he was seeking and the dates he thought were pertinent. The young man then selected a stack of old newspapers and gave it to my father saying, "Go sit down and look in these." And Eureka! My father found James Manion's obituary. From the obituary, my mother was able to track down the whereabouts of all of his children, although she had been unable to do so for the previous ten years.
