Chicago Biographical Publishing Company 1893 Transcribed by Cindy Pegg John Carter was a native of Johnson County, IL. He was the son of Vincent Carter who was born in North Carolina in 1803 but raised in Smith County, Tenn. Vincent later moved to Giles County, Tenn and in 1850 he moved to Illinois with his family. Vincent remained in Vienna, IL until his death in 1873. John Carter's mother had died in 1857 and she and Vincent were both buried in Johnson Cemetery. Vincent Carter was married twice. First in Alabama to Miss Sarah Patterson who died in Smith Co. Tenn. They had three children, Dorcas who died in 1857 in Missouri, Neal S. who died in Vienna Township and is buried in Johnson Cemetery and William G. who died in Union County. Vincent then married Elizabeth Rose of Giles County, TN and had eleven more children: John; F. M.; Mary, wife of Henry F. Bridges; Rebecca A.; Lucy B., wife of James Card; Saba W., wife of A. D. Williams; James H.; Tennessee E., wife of Hugh Wallace; Sarah, wife of William H. Adams; Virginia and Eliza. John was first married to Miss Martha Neathery on 24 October 1854. Martha died December 28, 1873 and was buried in Johnson Cemetery. They had five children: William H.; John D.; Mary E.; Robert F. and Charles E.
