Transcribed by Cindy Pegg George W. SMOOT was born in 1845 in Simpson Township, Johnson County, IL, the son of Reed Smoot, born in North Carolina and Eliza Thomas. Reed was the son of George Smoot a native of Virginia who died in Kentucky about 1827. Eliza Thomas was the daughter of Henry Thomas of Weakley County, TN. The parents of George W. Smoot were married August 12, 1841. Reed and Eliza had 10 children. Their daughter, Sarah Ann was the widow of John O'Neal. Their son Warren O. Smoot enlisted in the Fourteenth Illinois Cavalry, Company G at the age of 20. He served under Captain Perkins and was captured on Stoneman's raid and died in Andersonville Prison 11 Nov. 1863. Their daughter Viola was the wife of W. T. Fern. Their son B. F. Smoot was a farmer of Simpson Township. Their son Ulich Z. was a farmer of Missouri. Their daughter Mary E. was the wife of S. F. Yandell who died in 1884. Their daughter Sarrillo died at the age of 22. Their daughter, Martha Jane died six months later at the age of 21. Their son, L. L. was a farmer and a Baptist clergyman. Their son George W. Smoot was a teacher. He married Paralee Hailey, widow of W. R.
