Cook Suname found on the 1850 CENSUS Of KANE COUNTY, ILLINOIS Published by Bernice G. Richard PREFACE Kane County, Illinois, today considered part of the six county Chicago metropolitan area, achieved its present boundaries in 1841. Geneva, one known as Herrington's Ford, was chosen the county seat when Kane was partitioned from LaSalle County. The county is named in honor of Elias Kent Kane, a New Yorker and Yale graduate. The first Secretary of State of Illinois, he was elected to the U. S. Senate in 1824 and 1830. He died in office 12 December 1835. Christopher Payne of New York is honored as the first resident of the county settling in 1832 near Batavia. Immigration improved in 1835 when the Pottawatomies were removed west of the Mississippi. A school was organized in 1834 and a Church in 1835. Public lands came on the market in 1842. This transcription of the 1850 census counted a population of 16,703 making it one of the most populous in the state at the time. Kane County has an area of 540 square miles. Aurora and Elgin then as now were the two largest cities in the county. Because the microfilm was smudged and blotted I resorted to question Marks within and after surnames when there was doubt about the correct transcription. Some notations defy interpretation such as `M` for place of birth. The original census page number and town name is noted so the user may go directly to the microfilm. Information transcribed includes dwelling number, family number, name, age, gender, occupation for males 16 or over, value of real property owned by the head of household and state or country of birth. There are a total of 397 pages, 2,820 dwelling houses and 3,991 families. The enumeration was started on 5 Sept 1850 and concluded on 16 Nov 1850. The census is recorded on Roll # M432 and reel # 112. copied and indexed by Patricia Pate Havlice 1803 Neptune Lane Houston, Tx. 77062 CONTENTS NAME OF TOWN PAGE Elgin 1 Rutland 59 Dundee 81 Plato 115 Hamshire 135 Burlington 155 Virgil 171 Campton 187 St. Charles 208 Geneva 261 Batavia 285 Big Rock 309 Blackberry 321 Kaneville 339 Sugar Grove 335 Aurora 373 pg 46. 315/423 (Should read Theron B.
