I am very humble in saying thank you for the wonderful response I have had via voice on the street and on the phone. I am very grateful to Liz Robinson for her fine write-up and to the Review staff for their acceptance of the articles to come under the familiar name of “Just Reminiscing." I will try to do my very best. So here goes . . . From Puffles to Animals? Could this happen and how could such a thing be when so few folks even know what Puffles are? To begin, the Puffles Factory came into existence when Mr. Morrow bought the old Carbon Works down on the end of First Street. He renovated it and made Puffles. These were dainty sweet or salted morsels for snacking and were the beginning of the potato french fries and later the potato chips. Perhaps some will even remember when Mr. Benning made potato chips and, they were sold in small bags. A daughter of ours worked for him throughout the summer vacation. So much for the chips, lets get back to puffles. I can't recall how long the factory made them but the Morrow family lived in the H. H. Brey house on Fifth Street when it was vacated by the Brey family in favor of the beautiful home they built back in 1928 over on the hilltop. It was called Hillcrest and the street going past there bears its name. It is now occupied by their daughter Miss Mildred Brey, for many years as art teacher in our school district. Mr. Morrow had back luck when the factory burned to the ground and he could not rebuild. He later moved to Elgin for several years and finally moved the family to California. Being very handy with various sized pieces of wood and some good sized tree trunks he fashioned animals the likes of which can still be seen in front of the Milk Pail on Rt. 25. Here I will stop for this week and hope there will be a response big enough to the Dundee Review for a recipe of how to makes Puffles. My thanks to Mrs. Ruth Freuchtenicht of Elgin who gave me some of the information on the Morrow family and who also remembered back when they made Puffles. Be with you all again next week.
