She died without regaining consciousness. Her husband, who is 85 years old, is under arrest and is said to have admitted the deed, saying he attacked her in anger. Baldwin took a large dose of paris green before he was arrested, but the doctors saved his life. Apparently Mrs. Baldwin had been attacked while asleep, some time between midnight and dawn. A blood-stained hammer was found in the woodshed at the rear of the house. Although well known and respected pioneer residents of Kane county, the aged couple had been quarreling for some time, it is said. Neighbors say "Uncle Silas," as he is known, spoke of his troubles when he told a relative, "I'm going to put a stop to this quarrel." When arrested by State's Attorney John R. Powers Baldwin disclaimed all knowledge of the crime. Later he is said to have told his nephew, D. B. Baldwin, a farmer living near the village, that he struck his wife with the hammer, smashing her skull.
