Jencks shortly after midnight. She had been in rapidly declining health for some time but the end came somewhat unexpectedly, a sudden turn for the worse developing about 11 o'clock. Mrs. Hammond had spent most of her married life at Harvard, but on account of her health she was brought to Elgin last spring. Death was caused by old age with a slight dropsical tendency. She was 77 years of age last December. She was born in Cattaraugus county, New York and came to Harvard in 1868. She was the widow of George W. Hammond who served in the civil war and died two years ago. Deceased's daughters are Mrs. Theodore Mitchell of Milton Vale, Kansas; Mrs. Frank Newman of Harvard and Mrs. J. T. Jencks of Elgin. One son, Will Hammond of Harvard, survives. From 1842 - 1868 deceased resided near Wayne. Her maiden name was Lucinda Pratt.
