Obituary - Elgin Daily Courier News - 5 Jan 1973 (Friday) p. 23 col. 5 - JOHN 
H. KERN - Florida - John H. Kern 97 of 2847 Sixth St. Petersburg, Fla., 
formerly of Elgin, died Thursday in his home following an extended illness. 
Born in Green Bay, Wis., Aug. 28 1875 , he came to Elgin as a youth and 
resided here until 32 years ago. He married the former Emma E. Range, Feb. 24, 
1904. For many years he was employed as a foreman by the Illinois Watch Case 
co. and later with the Elgin National Watch Co. He was a member and past 
master of Monitor Lodge 522, AF and AM. Surviving are four children Mrs. I.A. 
(Marion) Koch of St. Petersburg, Fla., Miss Ione Kern of Elgin, Earl Kern of 
Palm Bay, Fla., and Mrs. Earl (Helen) Nelson of Batavia; six grandchildren; 22 
great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren. Besides his parents, 
he was preceded in death by his wife in 1961, two brothers, George and Charles 
P. Kern and one sister Mrs. Louise Schultz. Funersal services will be held 
Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the Schmidt Funeral Home, Elgin, the Rev. Dr. 
Carleton C. Rogers, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. 
Burial will be in Lake Street Memorial Park Cemetery. Masonic services will be 
conducted by Monitor Lodge 522, AF and AM, at the time of the service. Friedns 
may call in the funeral home after 5 p.m. today. A memorial has been 
established for the Illinois Masonic Home, Sullivan. Reber Mortuary Service is 
in charge of the arrangements.
