Lord, Who Gave Freely to Home City, Expires, Aged 87 George P. Lord, Elgin's foremost citizen, died at his home there after more than a year of lingering illness. Practically unconscious for more than twenty- four hours, he felt no pain and the only physical change apparent was the cessation of his pulse beats. Nobody ever did more for Elgin than Mr. Lord. He spent much of his time and money beautifying Lord's Park, which he and his wife presented to the city. Recently he donated land and a fine building for the Old People's Home. He gave freely to the Y. M. C. A., the churches and all public institutions. Mr. Lord was born at Leroy, N.Y., March 26, 1810, and was a descendant of one of the oldest pioneer families of the United States. He began life as a clerk for Alfred Tappan in Buffalo. In 1855 he came West and was with Reynolds, Ely & Co., at that time the largest grocery firm in that section of the country. For nine years he was manager of the Elgin National watch factory. At different times he was Mayor, supervisor, president of the board of education, treasurer of the Illinois Northern insane hospital and president of the board of water commissioners.
