The main entrance road is at the Somonauk Street curve, 2 blocks west of Illinois Route 47, in the city of Yorkville. The cemetery has been in continual use since 1866 and is beautifully maintained. Recently, the State of Illinois transferred part of the Game Farm lands to Elmwood Cemetery, extending the previous northern boundary. Elmwood Cemetery was created on April 23, 1866 when the directors of the new founded Elmwood Cemetery Association purchased for $615.60, eight acres of land in Section 29, Township 37 North, Range 7 East of the Third Principal Meridian (Bristol Township) from Josephine Lindley, Andrew H. and Rachel L. Arnold, and Ebenezer and Ardelia Marston and had it surveyed into 561 burial lots, each lot accommodating six graves. The first officers of the association were: Isaac Crooker, president; Menzo W. Lane, secretary-treasurer; and directors Nathaniel R. Hobbs, Walter Dixon, and Francis T. Seely. The first sale of lots took place July 21, 1866. Bodies were moved to Elmwood Cemetery from an earlier public cemetery, the Bristol Burying Ground, opened about 1838 but abandoned by 1876. No burial records of this earlier cemetery exist, if any were kept at all. In 1877, Elisha E. Lloyd wrote "I have tried several times to find his (Elisha Emmons) grave in the old Burying Ground at Bristol but could not find anyone that knew where he laid." The old Bristol Burying Ground is shown as a 135' by 300' tract on the plat map of "McClellan's Addition to Bristol" recorded with the Kendall County Recorder on December 5, 1849. It was located on what is today the northeast corner of Park Street and Bristol Road in Yorkville. These tombstone inscriptions were copied by Vic Smith and Stephanie Todd in the summer of 1992; the tombstone inscriptions in this publication were in place when we proofread them on October 3, 1992. As in all old cemeteries, many of the stones were difficult to read. Over time, the letter G deteriorates to a C, E to F or L, 4 to 1, etc. Because spelling was not nearly as important in the past as it is today, we occasionally found surnames spelled differently within the same family, sometimes on the same stone. We copied stonecutter's spelling and date errors exactly as they were engraved; one death date we found was February 31. We have made every attempt to be as accurate as possible; after the original field notes were typed, the manuscript was taken back out to the cemetery and proof-read against the tombstones. Where we were unable to positively decipher an inscription, we took a collective "best guess" and underlined it in the text. Field notes, fraternal markers, etc. are shown in italics. Our thanks to volunteers Ron Clark and Tom Todd for their help in transcribing and to grounds-keeper Fred Caudle who helped rescue tombstones swallowed in shrubs and who looked the other way while Vic and I dug up a buried cache of tombstones moved to Elmwood from the Old Bristol Burying Ground. We are grateful to Charles Doetschmann, Greg Sibenaller and the directors of the Elmwood Cemetery Association for their kind permission and cooperation. About 1958, data from this book was copied onto burial cards that are used by the sexton today. Evidence is that the Elmwood Burial Record was started in September of 1899. The unknown compiler carefully reconstructed earlier burial information from tombstones that were in place in 1899. As a result, if no tombstone was in place in 1899, there is no record of the burial. Conversely, the Elmwood Burial Record shows burials that supposedly took place prior to 1866 when the cemetery was first opened, when in fact, those burials were either reinterred after 1866 from other cemeteries, or are only memorial. Evidence shows that the earliest entries appear to have been copied from tombstones that were in place in September 1899. They are not in any chronological order like burials after that date are, they contain nothing but what is engraved on the tombstone, and the burial dates are most often the death date plus two days. From 1899 to 1958, burial information was entered as burials occurred. This is not intended to be a complete copy of the burial records. I compared each tombstone we found to the burial records and compiled the following list from the burial records for those entries where: -there is an entry in the burial records, but we found no tombstone on the grave. -a discrepancy exists between the information on the tombstone and the burial records -we felt the lot location is important to establish family relationships -the information in the burial records was more specific than that on the tombstone. The following information includes: name; Adult or Child; date of burial; lot number; location on lot.
