Sitting in a stand of native oak trees on the east bank of the Fox River, it has been in continuous use since 1855. The cemetery is situated on Main Street, near the intersection of Routes 25 and 71 in the Village of Oswego. L. B. Judson, the owner of the Oswego Oak Grove Cemetery as it was called then, sold the first burial plot in 1855 to Jesse Holt for $3.00. Judson created this cemetery out of the necessity of reinterring graves from an earlier, now defunct burying ground, located on his 1846 subdivision Louck's and Judson's Addition to Oswego. In 1877, ownership was transferred to the Oswego Cemetery Association. It is now owned and maintained by Oswego Township. On appearances, the Oswego Cemetery is divided into three sections: South section Rows 1 through 26 Middle section Rows 27 through 37 North section Rows 38 through 47 The north section was added in 1877. The tombstones are not uniformly in rows; be aware that the tombstones in a single family burial plot may be listed here in more than one row. These tombstone inscriptions were copied by Stephenie Todd, Dolores Nelson, Mickie Meegan and Jim Peterson in the summer of 1993; all tombstones in place as of June 6, 1994 are included. We have made every attempt to be as accurate as possible; after the original field notes were typed, the rough manuscript was taken back out to the cemetery and proof-read against the tombstones. Spelling errors on the tombstones have not been corrected, thus you will notice Buell spelled three different ways in the same burial plot. Where we were unable to decipher an inscription, we took a "best guess" and underlined it in the text. Field notes, fraternal markers, etc. are shown in italics. Our thanks to our friends Ron Votaw and the late Bob Weber. Stephenie Todd Oswego, Illinois Row 1, East to west: x Lillie A., Dau of R. & R.
