Laird was returning to his home when the tragedy occurred. He drove a wagon loaded with merchandise. The whistle of the passenger train warned Laird of the danger and he slowed his horse to a walk to wait for a clear track. As the train came on the horse jumped and dashed ahead. The horse was thrown forty feet and instantly killed. Laird was hurled to one side, dead, and the wagon was demolished. Laird’s wife and 15-year-old daughter survive him. He was one of the most prominent farmers in Seward township.
