State Representative Resigns-Charged With Bigamy State Representative Lloyd A. Meyer, of Sabula, has been a busy man, if charges filed May 18, the office of the county clerk are true. Meyer, politician and feed salesman, is charged by Helen Meyer with maintaining two families upon various occasions since 1936. The petition states that the claimant, Helen Meyer, was residing in Meyersdale, Pennsylvania, in 1935 and 1936, when she met Meyer, who she was led to believe was a single man. The couple were reportedly married June 19, 1936, at Roanoke, Virginia, by a justice of the peace and at various times after that lived together as husband and wife at Galesburg, Illinois, Elkhart, Indiana, and Fort Dodge, Iowa. The petition charges that a daughter was born March 8, 1938, at Elkhart, Indiana, and a son, August 13, 1940, at a Galesburg, Illinois hospital. The petition further charges that the couple lived together as husband and wife until 1933, when Meyer is alleged to have deserted his family. The claimant alleges that she learned in 1944 that Meyer was married and had been at all times since she had known him and had a wife and family in Sabula. She charges he has refused to support her and the two named children, even though he has repeatedly acknowledged paternity of the children. The proceedings are being brought under the provisions of an Iowa statute relating to paternity of illegitimate children and the obligation of parents thereto. The complainant asks the court to establish the paternity of the children and that judgment be entered for the support of two children until 18 years of age and also for a lump sum covering the amount paid out by the claimant for support of the children since the alleged desertion two years ago. The complainant further asks for a jury trial of the case, the petition being filed by a Fort Dodge firm of attorneys. It was reported today that Meyer had resigned his post as State Representative, effective May 23. The announcement, however, is without confirmation.
