Mrs. Evelyn Burnette, 33, of Zion, taken alive from the river after the crash died of burns in Sherman hospital. The other three occupants of the plane were burned to death immediately after the plane hit the river bank and burst into flames. They were Mrs. Burnette's husband, Van Ness L. Burnette, 36, pilot of the plane; Mrs. Krisinthia Reistad, Mrs. Burnette's mother and Mrs. Dora Paul of Zion, a neighbor of the Burnettes. Harold Mowrer, manager of the Elgin airport said the Piper Clipper four passenger plane took off and was about 500 feet int the air when it plummeted into the river bank. Burnette had taken off originally from the Waukegan airport and was on a return flight to Waukegan when the crash occurred.
