With his wife struggling fiercely to prevent him running a rabzor [sic] across his throat with suicidal intent, Simon Carney, of Rosecrans, one Thursday morning, finally pushed her aside long enough to accomplish his end and now lies dead at his home in the village northwest of here. With his wife, Carney was in a rear part of their little home when he drew a razor and told her that he was going to die. At first his wife thought he was joking but in a moment realized that he was in earnest and rushed toward him to seize the razor which he had opened and started to raise to his throat. The frightened woman grabbed hold of Carney’s arm and tried to pull the razor from his grasp, but was unable to get it away and in the fight, it is said she received a bad gash herself. Finally Carney pushed her aside and before she could return to continue the struggle, the man drew the sharp blade across his throat and cut a terrible gash nearly from ear to ear. Death came over him in a few minutes. It is given as reason for the man’s terrible act that he was demented, having shown some signs of an unbalanced mind for a short time past. Additional Comments: Kenosha Evening News (front page), Friday 5 Feb 1904 [WRONG NAME GIVEN - SOME PARTS MAY APPLY TO THE OTHER MAN] CARNEY IS A SUICIDE Well Known Farmer Near State Line Hacks His Throat With a Razor With Fatal Results. AWFUL STRUGGLE FOR DEATH Wife Attempts to Save the Life of Her Husband and is Terribly Cut About Hands and Arms—Insanity the Cause. Myles Carney, a well known farmer residing at the state line near the village of Russell, committed suicide Thursday afternoon by hacking his throat with a razor. The suicide has caused a great sensation in Pleasant Prairie where the deceased was well known and connected with several of the best known families in the town. It is alleged that Carney was insane at the time of his awful deed. Mrs. Carney attempted to prevent the suicide of her husband and was terribly cut about the arms and hands. It is stated that her injuries are not serious and she will recover. Carney had been acting strangely for several days but he had given no indication that he was meditating self destruction. He was about the house Thursday morning and seemed to be in better spirits than on previous days. His wife was alone in the house with him and shortly after dinner he began to act as if he was suffering from great mental anguish. Mrs. Carney made him as comfortable as she could and then went out into the yard for an errand. When she returned to the house she was horrified to see her husband standing in the middle of the room with an open razor in his hand. She at once devined the purpose of the razor and rushing over to him she attempted to take the weapon away from him. Then followed a terrible struggle. The man weakened by his mental anguish still proved more than a match for the woman. In his frenzy Carney managed to break away from his wife and slashed his throat. Mrs. Carney did not give up, and seeing that the wound that had been made was not a fatal one she renewed her efforts to get possession of the weapon. In the struggle she managed to get hold of the razor and her hand was seriously cut. The room was smeared with blood and other marks of the terrible conflict but the man fought furiously. Finally the razor was wrested from his bloody hand and it fell to the floor, the blade being broken in two. Mrs. Carney, overcome by the excitement and loss of blood, fell to the floor exhausted. The man then picked up one of the broken pieces of the razor and in sight of his wife hacked his throat until the jugular vein had been severed and he fell to the floor. Mrs. Carney managed to call the neighbors but the man died before medical aid could be secured. As soon as possible the coronor of Lake county was called and he secured a jury to investigate the case. Carney had resided near the state line for many years and was well known in Kenosha and Pleasant Prairie. It is said that there were several cases of insanity in the family. The arrangements for the funeral have not as yet been made.
