MEDAL AWARDED TO ZION SOLDIER KILLED IN ACTION

Washington, D. C., Feb. 26, 1945

The war department today announced the posthumous award of the silver star to 
Pvt. John W. Connell, an infantryman whose mother, Mrs. Lilly Connell, lives at 
3008 Elim Ave, Zion, IL. His citation said: "On June 24, 1944, on Saipan, when 
the platoon of which he was a member was taken under heavy crossfire from enemy 
machine guns, altho wounded, he indicated to his platoon sergeant the location 
of these positions and delivered his own rifle fire upon them. In so doing, he 
drew upon himself enemy crossfire, causing additional wounds which proved to be 
fatal."
