Mr. Hallowell was reared and educated in his native land and served a regular apprenticeship to the tailor trade, finishing his term of service about the time that he attained his majority. He then traveled and worked as a journeyman tailor in various cities. He spent one year in New Castle, Northumberland then went to London where he worked three years. In 1837, he emigrated to America, landing in Quebec, Canada where he worked a his trade and later in Toronto and Montreal. From Canada he went to New York. From thence he went to Charlemont, Mass., where he carried on business for three years and where he was married on the 12th of May, 1845 to Miss Harriet Rice Hawkes. On the day of their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Hallowell set out for the West and arrived in Waukegan on the first of June following, Mr. Hallowell had an acquaintance here, a fellow apprentice from the old country, later widely known as the great nursery man, Robert Douglas, with whom he opened a modest tailor shop under the name of Douglas & Hallowell. They had no means with which to stock a store and did such work as their customers brought goods to make up. That connection continued two years when Mr. Douglas retired to engage in the nursery business. Mr. Hallowell then formed a partnership with Joseph Mallon and through the influence of a mutual friend they were enabled to secure a stock of goods in New York on credit and engaged in business under the firm name of Hallowell & Mallon Trees years later the connection was dissolved and from that time until 1861. Mr. Hallowell was alone in business. He then made a change and engaged in the manufacture of wagons in company with Crabtree. That partnership was dissolved after four years and Mr. Hallowell engaged as traveling salesman with Mr. Douglas in the nursery business. Five years later, he discontinued that work and traveled for a time for W.P. Yeoman since which time he had not been in active business. Five children, two sons and three daughters, were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hallowell, all born in Waukegan: William, George, Mrs. Charles Moody, Anna, of this city; Mrs. F. M. Gallagher of Sana Barbara, Cal.
