Pearce of Waukegan was drowned Friday afternoon in the lake at a point north of the Chicago Tie & Timber Preserving Company plant on the "island" across from the Waukegan harbor. The first intimation that the boy was in peril came when a small boy rushed into the tie plant office and gave the alarm that young Pearce was drowning to the engineer, A.E. Richards. Richards and Fireman Earl Peters rushed out of the plant and to the beach racing along to the scene of the tragedy at the top of their speed. However when they arrived on the scene the boy had already met his fate. The two dashed into the water and swam out. The body was not in sight even then, but they finally located it in about six feet of water and brought the burden to shore where efforts to bring resuscitation were tried by in vain. The boy is Clarendon Harris Pearce, aged 10. He left the residence of Steele court soon after noon with a newsboy named Paul Gosling, telling his parents that he would help Gosling on his route. It is thought that he went beyond his depth while in swimming in the slip near the tie plant. The spot near which young Pearce met his fate seems to be a sinister one as it has averaged about one drowning a year beginning with the death of Michael Hussey's son some years ago. The city's sympathy is with the ex-mayor and family.
