LITTLE BOY FATALLY BURNED

Bad Accident at Libertyville Hotel Tuesday


Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Pontow, who but recently assumed possession of the 
Libertyville Hotel suffered the loss of their only child, a boy of three years, 
in a most distressing manner Tuesday.

The parents had left their room and gone down stairs.  Little Frederick awakened 
and finding himself alone, got up, and it is presumed, amused himself by 
striking matches.

In any event a passer by on the street noticed flames in the room and rushed 
into the hotel exclaiming the building was on fire.

Upon reaching their room the parents were horrified to find their child 
enveloped in flames.  His night gown burned off, literally cooking the tender 
flesh.  A physician was summoned but all that could be done was to lessen the 
child's suffering until death should relieve him.  He lived but three hours.

Frederick Raylond Pontow was born in Chicago, May 16, 1897, and but a few weeks 
since came with his parents to Libertyville.  By his bright, attractive manner 
the little fellow had attracted more than casual attention, and hardly a 
stranger passed him without a friendly greeting which he always recognized with 
a cheerful smile.

Funeral services were held in the M.E. church Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Dix 
presiding, after which the little body was laid to rest in Lakeside cemetery.

Having just come among us, Mr. and Mrs. Pontow, feel the more their sorrow, and 
to them we extend our deepest sympathy, and assure them of the universal feeling 
of compassion accorded them by our people.
