When two years old, his parents removed to Waukegan Illinois and with the expection of seven (1859-1865) spent in California and Nevada, he has since lived in Lake County. Mr. Protine was twice married. His first companion, Martha Gonyo departed this life in 1871, survied by two children, Mrs. Helen Genty of Chicago and William Protine of Warrenton. In 1874 he was married to Martha Davis and to them were born five sons, Walter, Louis, Fred, Frank and Philip. Of these, Louis and Philip alone remain to comfort their mother in this sorrow. For thirty-one years Mr. Protine had been identified with Libertyville as a citizen and a business man. He was industrious and exact in all his transactions. He always respected religion and often expressed his admiration of every sincere and earnest disciple of Christ. No one was more ready to respond to the relief of the needy or distressed. He was a loyal friend, a good neighbor, a stalwart citizen who fearlessly maintained that which his conscience approved. Since retiring from his business four years ago his health began to fail. Four two years he has been a sufferer and during most of the last year has been confined to his room and bed. It has often been said of Mr. Protine that he was the “youngest old man” in the village. His warmest friends were among the younger element his sympathies were with them in their spirits, their organizations, their politics and business. He insisted in being one of them. Never was there a more congenial appreciative and kindly man. His keen wit and jolly demeanor endeared him, particularly to them he has a steadfast friend.
