His demise was a surprise to all his friends, who though realizing he could not live long, were not prepared for the sad intelligence. Frank Protine was about 19 years of age, a fine young man, possessed of a gentleness almost feminine, yet impressing one by his strong individuality and determination. Few knew him intimately as his affliction made him reticent and very unobtrusive. His every exertion was to appear happy and hide from those with whom he came in contact his knowledge that he could not long live. He spurned sympathy, preferring to bear his sorrow alone, and yet all felt deeply for the splendid young man whose life was so surely ebbing. He had been confined to his bed less than two weeks and did not seem to his relatives to be dangerously ill until within a few days of his death, and yet he himself realized he would not rally and was prepared to go. “Frankie” as he was familiarly called will be greatly missed. Though he “lived within himself” all knew why and he was the more beloved for his brave struggle with the inevitable. It is oft said of some friend who has passed away that he had not an enemy. This is seldom true, but we believe in this case is an absolute fact. We were all silently sympathetic and all loved this bright, jovial and proud young friend. His example in his terrible affliction can but prove beneficial. He bore his burden with Christian fortitude, and none but his God will ever know with what agony he saw his life slowly slipping away. Funeral services at which Dr. Robinson officiated, were held at the Methodist church Friday at 1 pm interment being in Lakeside cemetery. Additional Comments: Copyright ©2013 by Kathy Stinson.
