WOOD Memorial services for Lt. Paul W. Wood, Jr., will be held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Libertyville Presbyterian church by the Rev. Glenn M. Garber. Paul, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Wood, Sr., was pilot and sole occupant of a Mustang fighter plane which developed engine trouble over Germany on June 29, 1944 and failed to return to its base in England. The squadron was on a mission to Berlin. Since o word had been received from or of him after a year, the War department has listed him as dead. LT. PAUL WOOD, JR. Paul was born in Pittsburg, Kas., Oct. 19, 1922, and the family moved to Culver City, Calif., and in 1930 they came to Arlington Heights , the father being connected with the state highway department. When Pal was a junior in high school, the family came to Libertyville and he graduated from LTHS in 1940, making the "L" club in football. He studied engineering two years at the University of Illinois and in Sept. 1942 he enlisted in the air corps. He was trained at Keesler Field, Shaw Field, and Moultrie, Ga., where he graduated as a pilot Oct. 1, 1943. He was sent to FLorida for training in the P-51 Mustang and was sent overseas in Jan. 1944. He served five months on operational missions and in combat over enemy territory. His parents have the air medal which was presented to him in June 1944 and brought to them by h is roommate from England. He is credited with shooting down four planes and serving more than 200 hours of missions. In addition to his parents, three sisters, Anna Lee, Marilyn, and Virginia, and a brother, Dick, survive.
