July 26, 1890 A SUNDAY DROWNING The Eldest Son of John Berry Accidentally Drowned in the Canal. Last Sunday morning about 10 o'clock Jesse Berry, the 16 year old son of John Berry, of North Ottawa, left home in company with his two little brothers for a drive about town. They went up the Marseilles road to the White bridge, where Jesse met some of his young friends and all went swimming in the canal. young Berry was the first to get into the water, which was quite cold, and after swimming out a little way he came back to shore. John McGrath, James Mooney and John Carey, his three companions, were on the bank undressing and told Jesse to go out farther where it was over his head. He swam out to the middle of the stream and one of the boys noticed he was drowning and called for help, but before assistance came he had gone down the last time. He drowned in sight of his little brothers, who were overcome with grief and had to be taken home by people residing near by. Mike Moloney fished the body out of the canal about forty minutes later. An inquest was held and the jury returned a verdict of accidental death by drowning, in accordance with the above facts. The funeral took place from the late residence, on Marquette street, at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. The remains were interred in the Catholic cemetery. ------------------------------------------------------------- UGENWEB NOTICE: These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by other organiza- tions or persons.
