Achiel D. VanDeSampel, 88, of No. 86 Circle Drive, Streator, Ill., formerly of Rock Island, died Wednesday, June 22, 1994, at St. Mary's Hospital, Streator. Services are 9 a.m. Saturday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island. Burial is in Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island. Visitation is 2 to 6 p.m. Friday, with a rosary to be recited at 5. Mr. VanDeSampel was born Oct. 8, 1905, in Aalter, Oost Flanders, Belgium, the son of Charles amd Maria Braet VanDeSampel. He married Norva Romont Dec. 10, 1928, in Sheffield. She died May 24, 1989. He had been employed for 13 years at Anthony Co., Streator, as a standards engineer, retiring in 1975. He previously was employed from 1937 to 1961 at the former J.I. Case Co., Rock Island. He had also previously worked at the former International Harvester, East Moline, the former Servus Rubber Co., Rock Island, the former Rock Island Plow Co., and Phelps Light and Power Co., Rock Island, and spent several years farming. He came to the United States from Belgium in 1906 and lived in Rock island until 1962 when he moved to Streator. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Streater, a former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Rock Island, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 645, Streator, and a member and past president of the former Belgium-American- Brotherhood, Rock Island. He enjoyed playing bingo. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Charles G. and Pat VanDeSampel Sr., Taylor Ridge; grandchildren, Bonnie Kibling and Charles G. VanDeSampel Jr., both of Rock Island; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Edward VanDeSampel, Kewanee; and a special friend, George VanHoe, Rock Island."
