She was the last of ten children of John and Mary Irwin, and over 93 years she lived on the farm southwest of Lawrenceville and southeast of Bridgeport. On March 28, 1948, Mrs. Leighty was subject of an interview written by Miss Addie McElfresh of the Sun-Commercial, shortly after the alert, entertaining Mrs. Leighty had observed her 92 birthday anniversary. On this occasion she reminisced of the old days of her girlhood, of the first road built past the farm-then the Irwin farm-back when people lived closer to their neighbors and their loved ones. In her interview she had such comments as "Hard work never hurt anybody" and "I don't worry…I just turn it over to the Lord." On December 29, 1881, she and Lewis Leighty were married and at his death, on January 7, 1944, their marriage had spanned over 62 years. At the time of her death, Mrs. Leighty was the eldest member of the Zion Methodist church. She was converted and joined that church at the age of 13 years, and her membership extended through 80 years. Rev. Sabine was pastor when she joined the church. Her church activities and interest never lagged, and she was a charter member of the missionary society of the church. At 89 years of age she fell and broke a hip-only to recover full vigor afterwards. The death of the venerable resident, however, followed a long illness. For the past fourteen months she had been ill, with nurses at her side at all times. She and Mr. Leighty were parents of four children. The eldest died in infancy. The others are Mrs. Mary Akin, Oscar Leighty and Mrs. Bessie Finley, all residing near the home farm. She also leaves seven grandsons and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services are to be conducted at 2 P.M. Sunday at the Zion Church, four miles southwest of Lawrenceville, with the Rev. Homer Herrin officiating. Burial will be in Zion Cemetery.
