(paraphrased) 71 year-old Martin B. Doyle, who was a veteran of the Civil War, died early yesterday morning in a room he was renting at 323 Missouri Ave NW in Washington, DC. Damage to the room was minimal, and it is believed the fire started from his smoking in bed. He had been dead a short time when he was found by the son of the owner of the house. His clay pipe was found beside the bed, which was destroyed by the fire. The death was declared accidental. Up until a short while ago, Doyle was living in the Soldiers' Home. He was born in Ireland and came to this country as a young man. Served in Co. E of the 140th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. [The newspaper states the 47th Infantry]. At enlistment he was a resident of Dixon (Lee County) Illinois. Additional Comments: Mr. Doyle is not my ancestor--I just paraphrase his obit as I hope someday a relative might find it. I came across the obit while looking for other information.
