H . B. Fouke. Hon. H. B. Fouke, one of Dubuque's most noted and distinguished lawyers is dead. His reputation as a great lawyer extended beyond the state. Few men had as wide and as extensive acquaintances with men as the deceased. He was a man of fine presence, frank, honorable and chivalrous to a high degree. On the platform he was the ideal orator and before a jury an invincible pleader. Deeply read in the law, he was the successful practitioner and lawyer. He was born in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, July 2nd, 1838. In 1854 he removed to Mt Morris, Illinois. He was a fellow student at Mt. Morris Seminary with the late Gen. John A Rawlins, secretary of war under Gen. Grant's administration. He graduated from the seminary and afterwards read law with Hon. J. K. Edsall, attorney general of Illinois, at Dixon, and was admitted to the bar in 1860. Later he came to Dubuque and became a partner in the law firm of Roberts & Fouke, subsequently of the firm of Fouke & Lyon, which continued up to the time of his death. In politics he was a democrat, but not a politician. Had he stooped to practical politics, he would have been called a leader. His plane of politics was of a higher type, consequently the offices that would have fitted him did not come. While not a communicant with any church, yet he possessed deep religious convictions. The Dubuque Bar Association passed appropriate resolutions. The funeral took place Tuesday afternoon. The Rev. Watters and Rev. Dr. Bingham officiated.
