It appears that a farmer with a wagon came for coal; the pit-car had to be turned at the bottom of the shaft, as the wagon chute and the railroad chutes are on opposite sides; the cages are self- dumping. Deceased at this time was at the lower landing, leaning over the edge of the shaft, shouting down to turn the car, when the cage came from the top, striking him on the head, killing him instantly. I ordered speaking tubes put in at once, so that men can communicate from top to bottom without danger.
