Stephenson, Jr. – Historian, Bock Family Association Vernon and Catherine Apel by Catherine Apel Vernon Apel was born October, 1922 in the same house he now resides. His parents are Albert Apel and Anna Schrauf Apel, now deceased. Vernon attended Blue Grass Grade School and graduated from Beason High School in 1941. He helped his father farm and in the winter months worked in a defense plant at Illiopolis. Uncls Sam called him into the service in August 1943, and he served overseas in Germany, Belgium, and Holland with the 84th Railsplitters Division. While in service, he received three battle stars and purple heart. After the war ended, Staff Sergeant Apel remained in the army of occupation located in Mannheim, Heidelberg and Frankfort, Germany. He went through Belgium and the Netherlands photographing graves of the soldiers who had served in the 84th Division. He arrived home May 31, 1946 and resumed farming. In September, 1946 Vernon married Catherine Ubbenga of Hartsburg. Catherine is the daughter of Henry and Rene (Klockenga) Ubbenga (now both deceased). Catherine attended Glenwild Grade School located in West Lincoln Township and Hartsburg High School. After their marriage, they set housekeeping on a farm south of Atlanta in the Blue Grass Area. In 1949 Vernon’s parents retired and moved to Lincoln, so Catherine and Vernon moved on the home place where they still reside. In March of 1951 Daniel Lynn was born to the union followed by Donna who was born March of 1945. Dan graduated from Lawndale Grade School, Beason High, and Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. He graduated from ISU with a degree in Agriculture. Dan was active in 4-H. Salutatorian of his high school class and attended Zion Lutheran Church with his family. He married Virginia Ostogic January, 1973 and after graduating, now resides in Mt. Morris, Illinois. Virginia teaches at Forreston High School, and Dan is associated with the Hydronics Engineering Company in that area. Their daughter, Nicole Ruth, was born June 20, 1982. Donna Kaye graduated from Lawndale Grade School and Beason High School, where she was Valedictorian of her class. She was also active in 4-H and Zion Lutheran Church. She graduated from Illinois State University in 1976 with a degree in Home Economics, specializing in Food and Nutrition. After working for Interstate United Corporation in Bloomington for a year, she completed a one year internship at St. Francis Hospital in Peoria and is now a registered dietitian doing consultant work with various health centers. Donna married David Allen Bishop September 1978. They are now residing in rural Atlanta where Dave is farming.
